This is the end of HBO Max. What changes await the platform?
Although two days ago we celebrated the first anniversary of HBO Max’s appearance in Poland, a moment later a business reorganization meant that the fate of the platform was woven into the whirlwind of events. What is she expecting? It’s already known.
First HBO GO, now HBO Max and then…
It started in 2010 and the premiere of the VOD HBO GO service. Poland was the second country after the United States to officially launch the service. It was originally only available to satellite, cable, and digital subscribers who had purchased access to the HBO channel package. Over time, the option to directly subscribe to the site appeared.
Ten years after its debut, the network’s owner decided to combine the services of HBO GO and HBO Now into one offering called HBO Max. After the launch of the new Max in May 2020, the slow extinction of the old platforms began. The Poles had to wait almost two years for their turn.
In May 2021, AT&T, an American telecommunications company and owner of WarnerMedia (formerly Time Warner), decided to exit the entertainment industry and proposed merging the company with Discovery, Inc. On April 8, 2022, the process was completed, resulting in the formation of a new conglomerate, Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. The company was led by then-Discovery President David Zaslav.
Before the official merger, it was already known that the company did not plan to maintain two platforms at the same time – HBO Max and Discovery +. Months passed and we learned more details about the merger.
Bloomberg has reached the latest information. According to the site, the new combined platform will retain HBO Max’s US pricing and be enriched with “thousands of content” offered by Discovery Inc., including movies and series available on Discovery+. Although plans are always subject to change a little, for now the combined VOD service is to be called simply Max.
We’re excited to bring all of Discovery’s content together with HBO Max’s content on a much better platform. […] This HBO Max, or whatever we call it for starters, is a product that we’ll be taking around the world and making a real impact on how people consume content. We believe in it because we believe we have the best content, portfolio and quality. And now he cares about it in a way that affects America.
David Zaslav, President of Warner Bros., Discovery Inc.
We’ll officially know everything on press day set by Warner Bros. Discovery on April 12, 2023. Plans for the Polish branch of HBO Max are expected to be known by the end of this year – the new platform was originally scheduled to hit the European market in 2024. So it will still be a few months before it is finally clear how much you will have to pay for the new offer.
