The University of Venda suspended the President of the Student Representative Council and suspended the other members of the SRC Executive for two years.
Smile Manganyi was initially suspended last month after students protested the challenges they faced on campus. The university said the march was illegal and that Mangani had incited violence during the protest.
A student allowance was one of the demands on their list. The university said the march was illegal and marred by violence. SRC President Manganyi was found guilty of misconduct and incitement to violence and suspended for three years.
The other 13 council members were also found guilty of misconduct and suspended from office for two years. Their suspension was suspended for two years.
The South African Students’ Congress (SASCO) at the University of Venda criticized the management for Mangani’s suspension. SASCO’s Mutshidzi Matidza says Mangani’s suspension is a management plan to instill fear in students.
“As political leaders here at the University of Venda, we see it as a threat, which means that in the future, when the SRC or student leaders at the time decide to go and stand up for the students, they will be removed, the management has not given justice of the leader, this problem does not affect Smile, it affects all of us.”
Limpopo Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command President Rotshidzwa Mukwevo says Mangani’s suspension was too harsh. Mukwevho says they are looking into the matter and will appeal the decision.
“I think what we can do is appeal to the university’s DC. The decision they made is too harsh, if it only applies to the president, it is not fair. It should apply to the entire cabinet of the SRS.”
Univen spokesperson Takalani Dzaga says Mangani has been suspended in accordance with the university’s bylaws.
“The University of Venda confirms that Mr. Smile Manganyi has been charged with misconduct for inciting violence in the form of illegal protest action, he has appeared before the Disciplinary Committee, in terms of the SRC constitution, if a member of the SRC is convicted by the disciplinary committee committee of the University he forfeits membership of the SRC, therefore Mr. Manganyi was accordingly removed from being a member of the SRC and President of the University of Venda SRC.”
The EFF Student Command says it will seek legal advice to challenge the suspension.
