Police in KwaZulu-Natal have confirmed that a man who took four people hostage at a house in Mountview in Verulam north of Durban has killed himself. The 65-year-old is believed to have held four people hostage in their home.
He first released an 18-year-old youth after shooting and wounding him. Three people were later released. All hostages were transported to a hospital for further medical attention.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that the hijacker is believed to be connected to the hostages. Prem Balram of private security company Reaction Unit SA, who was among the first at the scene, said the injured teenager was taken to hospital.
“An 18-year-old boy who was shot in the arm was eventually released from the house and received medical attention, South African police and a task force are currently at the residence negotiating with the suspect.” The suspect, a 65-year-old man and three other family members,” says Balram.
