World – This week’s Race (3) in England did not even make it to the end of the first lap and was abandoned after a heavy crash involving George Russell, Alexander Albon, Guanyu Zhou and Yuki Tsunoda, Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon. At first, the only information we had was that the Alfa Romeo driver’s car went straight at high speed, overturned and turned upside down.
It all started when Pierre Gasly tries to pass between Russell and Zhou at the start and hits the Mercedes driver. From there, it was a domino effect: Zhou took off at high speed, and the crash still took Tsunoda, Albon, and Ocon. A red flag was immediately raised and the lack of images showing the replay set the tone for the seriousness of the accident.
Russell quickly got out of the car and ran towards Albon to see if everything was okay with the Williams driver, who was also taking a long time to get out of the car. Tension gripped the racetrack, as word came in that Zhou was still trapped in the upside-down cockpit.
After a few minutes of complete uncertainty, the news we’ve been waiting for: Alfa Romeo has confirmed that Zhou is conscious, moving and has been taken to the hospital for a check-up. “Following an accident at the start of the British GP, Guanyu Zhou is conscious and is at the track medical center for evaluation,” the team announced via its official Twitter account.
After making sure the Chinese driver was okay, F1 finally released pictures of what actually happened, and the sight is horrifying: Zhou’s car not only flips upside down at high speed, but also flips over and comes to rest between the fence and barrier protection, very close to the stands.
